Cape Wrath Ultra training: preparing for a Highland expedition race

First, the honest part. The Cape Wrath Ultra as most people know it, an eight-day supported stage race up the Cape Wrath Trail, was run by Ourea Events, which entered administration in early 2026. The 2026 edition was cancelled. A successor for 2027 has been announced by the team behind the Spine Race, a non-stop, self-sufficient version of the same Fort William to Cape Wrath line, with the details still to be confirmed. So treat the numbers here as describing the challenge, not a live entry, and check the current organiser's site before you plan around dates or a format.

That said, the ground doesn't change, and the preparation for it is worth understanding whichever format returns.

The challenge, as last run

Roughly 400 km with 11,200 m of ascent across the trackless north-west Highlands: Knoydart, Kintail, Torridon, Fisherfield, Assynt, finishing at the Cape Wrath lighthouse. As a stage race it ran over eight days with provided camps; the proposed successor makes it non-stop and self-sufficient, which changes the sleep and kit problem entirely but not the terrain. Full-course finish rates ran around half.

The Highlands don't care which format you entered. The bogs and the river crossings are the same either way.

Wet feet, trackless ground, real navigation

The defining feature is not ascent, it's the ground: bog, pathless glens, and river crossings that turn dangerous after rain. Your feet are wet from early and stay wet. That macerates skin, and skin can't be toughened in the final month, so the work is in the routine: sock and shoe strategy tested on long wet days, taping rehearsed, a fixed feet-first ritual whenever you stop. Navigation is unmarked and must be trained on real rough ground in poor visibility. A wrong line in Fisherfield is a long, expensive mistake.

Days, or a single push

As a stage race, the skill is recovering overnight and moving well on yesterday's damage: back-to-back long Highland days in training, and a rehearsed camp routine. As a non-stop race, the problem becomes sleep strategy and cold, wet kit management over days, closer to the Spine than to a stage race, and the training shifts accordingly toward one long continuous rehearsal with a sleep plan. Either way the engine is ordinary capped easy volume, and either way strong loaded hiking on rough ground is the actual race pace, not running.

Where durability shows up

This is durability at the longest wavelength: whether output survives days of wet, rough, self-navigated ground. I'll be straight about the data. Heart rate while hiking loaded, wet and cold is a blunt signal, and the late-run efficiency readings I lean on elsewhere want steady running to read cleanly. So through a build for this I use those readings where they're valid, in the drier base months, and then plainer evidence: whether long back-to-back days were completed as planned, what the next day cost, how the feet came through, what the athlete reports about legs and mood. The data informs it. On this kind of race, judgement carries most of the weight.

The build

A base of capped easy volume and two strength sessions, then a specific block of long Highland days on rough wet ground, back-to-backs (or one long continuous rehearsal, depending on the format), real navigation in bad visibility, feet and kit drilled in the conditions you'd otherwise dodge. A generous taper. And a plan built around the actual event once its 2027 format is confirmed, rather than around the version that no longer runs.

What I watch

  • Loaded hiking pace on rough wet ground, fresh against the end of a long day.
  • The cost of day two after a big Highland day, or the second half of a long continuous rehearsal.
  • Feet after every long wet session, before the race gets to vote.
  • Navigation when tired and the cloud is down.
  • Fuelling and eating in the cold and wet, logged.
  • Recovery and motivation through the hardest training weeks.
