The Arc of Attrition is a hundred-plus miles of the South West Coast Path in late January. For 2027 it runs Coverack to Perranporth, about 173 km with 5,500 m of ascent and a 37-hour limit. The DNF rate sits above half most years, and the reason isn't the distance. It's the combination: Atlantic winter weather, two nights out, and a coast path that never gives you a flat mile.
Death by a thousand small climbs
The coast path doesn't climb mountains. It climbs the same 50 to 100 metres, over and over, down to a cove and back up, all day and all night. That constant up-and-down is its own kind of load: no long grind to settle into, no runnable flat to recover on, endless short eccentric hits on the descents into each cove. Legs that trained on gentle long climbs get taken apart by the relentlessness of it. Training has to include repetitive stepped climbing and descending, not just vertical metres.
Winter, at night, in Atlantic weather
A Friday-afternoon start means most runners see two nights and around fourteen hours of darkness each, in the kind of weather the Atlantic throws at Cornwall in January. The 2026 race started in a storm. So the mandatory kit is serious, and using it is the trained skill: layering while wet and moving, eating when cold kills appetite, headtorch navigation on a technical cliff path where a wrong step is genuinely dangerous. The Pendeen to St Ives stretch is the notorious one, late, technical, in the dark, exactly where tired runners come off the course.
The engine is fine. The management fails.
Most Arc DNFs are not fitness. They're feet gone soft in the wet, a body that stopped eating, a low at 3am that wasn't planned for. The runnable base is built the ordinary way, capped easy volume through the year. The race-specific work is the coast path itself, or the nearest stepped, technical, coastal ground you can find, run at night, in bad weather, until the kit and the fuelling and the low points are rehearsed rather than met for the first time on the night.
Where durability shows up
The Arc is a durability race dressed as a hundred miler. What I read through a build is how the legs hold up under repetitive stepped descending late in a long run, and whether pace and control survive the second half of a long night session. The coast path's constant gradient change makes clean pace-and-heart-rate reads harder, so I lean on comparable runnable sections for the durability numbers and treat the technical coastal work as logged evidence. The signal I care about most is the same one the desert taught me: aerobic system fine, legs no longer delivering. The data finds the weak link; I decide the fix.
The build
An aerobic base under a cap with two strength sessions and early descent work, because the coves bill the quads all day. Then a specific block of long stepped-terrain runs, night sections in winter weather, feet and kit drilled wet, and a rehearsed fuelling and low-point plan. A proper taper, and a race plan that treats the first night as patience, not racing.

Facts checked September 2026 against the race's published 2027 information: about 173 km, 5,500 m of ascent, a 37-hour limit, Coverack to a new finish at Perranporth Airfield, run under the UTMB World Series. DNF rates have run above 50% (2025 and 2026). The 2026 edition finished to Porthtowan over 161 km; don't confuse the two. Evidence level: the physiology matches the field notes; the winter, night and terrain demands are the race's.
